At the Deafblind Association of Slovenia DLAN, we held a meeting focused on raising awareness and educating participants about ethics and best practices when working with individuals with deafblindness. Together with personal assistants and volunteers, we discussed the importance of encouraging individuals with deafblindness in their daily activities and supporting them in learning the language of the deafblind. Special emphasis was placed on proper guidance and approaches to assisting individuals with deafblindness in various situations.
In the second part of the meeting, we conducted practical exercises where each participant experienced deafblindness through the use of assistive tools. The purpose of this exercise was to illustrate the challenges faced by individuals with deafblindness and to foster a deeper understanding of their world.
The meeting was highly educational and valuable for all participants, as it provided hands-on experience in understanding the perspective of individuals with deafblindness. These insights will greatly assist us in our future work and support efforts. Additionally, we created a safe space for personal assistants and volunteers to share their opinions and experiences.
