Representatives of the Deafblind Association of Slovenia, DLAN, attended a ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of the Hungarian organisation for the deafblind, Siketvakok Országos Egyesülete. On this honorable occasion, we would like to extend our sincere congratulations to the founders, the leadership, and, last but not least, to all of you who contribute to the success of the organisation. We would like to express our special thanks and congratulations to the Secretary and co-founder, Dorottya Kiráhhídi, and to the long-serving President, Tamás Gangl.
Almost 20 years of cooperation link the Slovenian and Hungarian organisations for the deafblind. We proudly recall the first meetings, which predate the founding of DLAN. In fact, Siketvakok Országos Egyesülete was the organisation that inspired the Slovenian Deafblind Association DLAN from the very beginning, and it continues to do so today. Our collaborations are based on trust, mutual respect, close friendship, and a willingness to learn from each other.
Hungary is one of the leading countries in the field of deafblindness, having successfully legislated the right to an interpreter for deafblind people in 2009. In Slovenia, we are still working towards securing these rights.
We were filled with immense gratitude and pride to be part of a wonderful event where the respect for the organisation and the field of deafblindness was outstanding. In his speech, Dr. Ádam Kósa, State Secretary for Disabled Persons, emphasised that deafblind people are a social group given the highest priority in Hungary.
Dr. Simona Gerenčer, Secretary of DLAN, highlighted in her speech that Hungary can certainly be proud of Siketvakok Országos Egyesülete, its leadership and activities, and especially the relationships between the various organisations (for the deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, and deafblind), which respect and support each other rather than hinder one another. Hungary should serve as a model for other countries, particularly Slovenia.
An inclusive society is not just a privilege but a right for everyone. Our strength lies not in merely helping those who face challenges, but in working together with them to create a better and fairer future.
